I didn’t realise I had an ilk

By Pixel at November 2, 2005 at 11:12 pm. Filed in open letters

I’ll be the first to admit I have different beliefs from most people. Because of that, I tend to keep to my own in ideological battles. I don’t go around from message board to message board attacking creationists (though my roommate does it quite vociferously and it is enjoyable to watch) and I don’t attack other bloggers unprovoked.François Tremblay, however, does.

I don’t mind that. I can take on the average visitor and defend my positions from the fiercest of attacks. What I mind is when people ignore my responses and keep accusing me of being a ‘disgusting fuck.’

I hate one-way arguments because both sides remain frustrated and no one wins. I also cannot tolerate censorship.

I hate it. People should be shut up as punishment for SPAMming or other, equally annoying habits, but not because their views are different.

Tremblay has consistently deleted my responses to his post. He even brags about it:

“Any other comment from you will be deleted permanently. I do not respect you or your speech.”

The libertarian who doesn’t respect speech. Wow. Surely he realizes the contradiction.

*sigh* I’m tired of this fight. This isn’t an argument about the issues. You could care less. You’ve called me an Anti-man Greenie (whatever that means) and have painted all of my views since with that brush.

Leave me alone Tremblay. Whatever your problem is, work it out or take it out on someone else. There’s no room for you in my psyche.

Don’t have a COW, man

By Pixel at November 2, 2005 at 5:24 pm. Filed in thought experiment

Assuming the “Coalition of the Willing” (hereafter referred to as “COW”) pulled out of the war in Iraq, would that make the war a loss?

Historically, people might say that the initiators pulling out means that they felt they were losing so they cut their losses, but does it really mean that?

Suppose Ex_Cal and moofruot start a fight with Seth and Eggo. Now, because Ex_Cal and moofruot kickass, they manage to whoop Seth and Eggo into submission in a matter of minutes. Then they decide to help them up. And they walk them to the hospital, despite the fact that Seth and Eggo are still throwing punches. If Ex_Cal and moof pulled out and left them to get to the hospital themselves, would that be declaring defeat?

Why does the analogy change when we think about it in the small scale?

If COW pulled out of “Operation Iraqi Freedom” (hereafter called “OIF”), would that be a declaration that the message behind OIF was false or would that just be COW pulling out?

To wit, if you ask me whether I’ve slept with your girlfriend and I refuse to answer, does that mean yes, no, or simply that I refused to answer?

Logically, it means the latter and the former are logical fallacies, but just because something is fallacious does not make it false.

hmm… Apparently the Plat Sock has a website. Who knew?
