I was in a spelling bee in 6th grade. I can't remember what I got out on. I just remember that my best friend had to spell "assessment", and the entire middle-school crowd started laughing after "A-S-S". I had to explain why to her afterwards.

I also remember that some kid got out on mayonnaise, and I've had trouble spelling that word ever since (honestly, I'm not sure whether I just spelled it right or not).

My one claim to fame in the 8th grade was not missing a single word on the spelling test the entire year. wow. How sad is that? but I love words, and I hate it when I type so fast that they come out wrong, because it makes me feel like a failure. :)

True story: when I was a kid I used to fail spelling bees on purpose even though I knew how to spell all the words, because I am an awesomely awesome speller, just so I wouldn't have to go on stage in front of the whole school.
